Final Project

The web 2.0 tool that I thought would be interesting to use in my class was storybird. This web tool uses real artists’ work to create a story. I’m hoping that the artwork will inspire the students to write in more detail and to think of story ideas. This will make writing fun for my students and I think they would love to share their work.

TPACK: Using this tool during creative writing time would be great for third graders. Some tools online are not easy to navigate, but this is very easy. They just drag and drop pictures and then type. The artwork is detailed and beautiful. The pictures will inspire the students to create a storyline. I have a teacher’s account and can add students to my group. The students could share and talk about their writing.

Standards:
3.5.2 Use varied word choices to make writing interesting.
3.5.2 Write descriptive pieces about people, places, things, or experiences that:
• develop a unified main idea.
• use details to support the main idea.

Below is a storybird I quickly put together for an example for my class. They're fun so you should try them.

Prezi

I was taught Prezi over a year ago. I thought that it would be easy to create a new presentation, but I had to relearn a few things. This is a very fun program and I think it's a way more interesting way to present than Powerpoint. I created my presentation from a wiki assignment I had to put together for my EDUC 511 class last semester. I hope you enjoy the videos. :)

RSS

I had to sign up for Google Reader last semester for a class, but I didn't really understand the point until now. The video describing the RSS was very helpful. Now that I understand the point I think I'll start using it.

Diigo

I learned about Diigo through a teacher last summer. I don't use it when I'm at school because it's blocked on our school server. I do find it useful at home though. I bookmarked different websites through out the year when I had time to surf the net. So my list will seem all over the place. If I were able to access it at school then I would love to share it with my students. Until then I just link sites to my school site. Below is the URL address. I'm going to try putting it on the side so that you can link to it.

Voicethread

I decided to do my voicethread on partial products. This is an algorithm that is introduced in third grade math using the Everyday Math Program. This is usually a hard process for students to remember the steps and get the correct answer. So I created a step by step example of how to do the process. This voicethread is not only a helpful resource for my students but also for parents. I would like to embed this onto my school website so that parents can watch it before helping their child with their homework.

Standards
3.2.2 Represent the concept of multiplication as repeated addition
3.1.2 Identify and interpret place value in whole numbers up to 1000.

Go!Animate Book Introduction

What Do You Call A Rhyming Riddle? A Hinky Pinky!

The book I chose to do this project on is a book I recently bought at the Scholastic warehouse. The title is What Do You Call a Rhyming Riddle? A Hinky Pinky! This is a book written by a fifth grade class in Columbus, Ohio. I really want to share this book with my class because my school is becoming an Expeditionary Learning Elementary. This is a form of project-based learning. I think this book is a great example of a publish project that students assembled, and is inspiring to get kids to think like a rhyming poet.

In the book the students write little riddles that rhyme. They teach how to create a similar riddle and even give some helpful rhyming words in the back. I would like to use this book in a poetry unit at the beginning of the year. I will read the book aloud to the students then they will create their own Hinky Pinky. They will go through the writing process, which will be taught beforehand. One important part of the process I will reinforce will be the editing stage. This is a stage most of my students like to skip or fly through. The book gives a clear definition and great example. The students and I will create an editing checklist from this book. I will write it on chart paper and hang it in my class for them to see and use. I will ask them to edit their riddle first and then give them a writing partner so they can edit together. Once we are done, we will have our own classroom book of rhyming riddles.

Standards:
3.4.7 Proofread one’s one writing as well as others using an editing checklist or list of rules.
3.3.5 Recognize that certain words and rhythmic patterns can be used in a selection to imitate sounds.

9 Elements of Digital Citizenship

I chose the issue of social networking because some of my students already have a facebook account. Since they are already publishing things about themselves now, it is important to teach them what is digital citizenship.

Issue: Social Networking
Element: Digital Access

I would like to create a discussions section on my school website at school. This would be much like a chat room so the students would be able to discuss topics in or out of school. All students will get a username and access wherever they can get internet. I would also find time either during morning work or end of the day routines to give everyone an equal opportunities to voice their thoughts or share. I already have some students with facebook accounts but I can’t promote using them because they are denied access through our school server.

Element: Digital Commerce
I would like to teach a mini lesson on advertisements and pop-ups on the internet. My students are between the ages of 8-10 and may be tempted to start clicking on things they are curious about on their screen. I would like to warn them to never click something before reading. The blogging I would like to create in my classroom will not have any advertisements though they will see some through facebook.

Element: Digital Communication
This is a very important thing to teach to my students because so many are now accessing things like facebook. I think that by having a chat room through the school website they will get to practice talking to each other than face to face or on the phone. I will have to discuss with them beforehand about what they type will have an affect on them. I will show different examples of how people made bad choices while communicating. I would also like to give them a survey through the internet to deepen their understanding.

Element: Digital Literacy
I would like to assign some tasks through the chat room. For example I might just ask a question – Who is Henry Ford? The students can share the different search engines and websites. In the end they will have used the internet to locate information and teach themselves and each other. In the future this will be a very important skill for my students. So it would be great to get them into the habit of finding answers themselves now.

Element: Digital Etiquette
This element seems very similar to digital communications to me. I will teach it the same way as digital communication with a mini lesson, discussion, and survey. I would also like to post some digital etiquette rules up on a chart paper for my students. For example one etiquette rule would be to reply to a question within 48 hours. Another would be to not exclude anyone in the chat or single anyone out. I would explain our chat room to be similar to our community circle that we do in the classroom. Treat everyone with respect.

Element: Digital Law
I would really like to share with students illegal downloading and messing with others’ work. It might be easy for someone in my classroom to obtain another student’s password because their passwords at school are their birthdays. I would stress to my students to never forget to log out and to never work under someone else’s name. I would set up a consequence with my principal for such an offense. Hopefully this will get my students’ attention and understanding that some things are private. I also want to stress with them about downloading because I’m sure that they have older brothers or sisters at home who are doing these things. I would like to warn them to not steal even though it is easy to do.

Element: Digital Rights and Responsibilities

When starting the chat room I know that I am going to have to discuss what things can be typed and when. I will tell everyone that they have a right to share their opinion and will not get judged even if everyone else in the classroom feels differently. I will also tell the students that they do not have the right to share others’ thoughts and feelings without permission. For example I don’t want my students writing sentences that start, My parents think… Not only would this possibly make an ugly situation pop up, but it is not fair to the parent to have something privately said to be published. I will make sure that a letter is sent home for parents and that parents do have access.

Element: Digital Health and Wellness
I will tell students about possible side effects from staring at a screen for too long. I will ask students to not be on the discussion page for more than 30 minutes. I will also send home a letter to parents with sources explaining these health concerns.

Element: Digital Security

The most important thing I think for my students to learn about this element is posting pictures of themselves. I would love for a police officer to come into my classroom to help explain how having their name, address, and picture on facebook is very dangerous and scary. I would suggest to my students to only have a few face shots and never include their last name. I would also like to tell them that it’s okay to have a made up name. I would also stress to never become friends or chat with a stranger.

Copyright Quiz

I took the quiz and I thought it was a little tough. I received a 57% at the end. I also am wondering about the National Anthem question. I thought that after so many years things lose their copyright...plus it's our National Anthem.

TPACK and Learning Landscape Video

In this video the students are collecting data for a wetlands project in their community. This is a very hands-on learning approach. I would say that this is a great example of TPACK. After watching the TPACK video I learned a lot about how integrating technology is being creative and whole. I have heard of TPACK before but this video did a great job explaining it. The students in the video can only do the learning with the computers and measurement tools provided. In a way it is like the lesson started as a TPK. The teachers had a great teaching approach and the technology. I wonder if it really fits with the content standards for that state. I was very impressed and motivated to teach after seeing the landscape video. The TPACK video I would like to share with my staff, because it was entertaining and informative.

Module 1 Standards

I teach third grade and there are few Indiana State Standards that incorporate technology in the wording, but many of the standards can be taught with technology. I found these three in Reading and Language Arts. The section was writing.

3.4.1 Find ideas for writing stories and descriptions in conversations with others; in books, magazines, or school textbooks; or on the Internet.
3.4.4 Use various reference materials (such as a dictionary, thesaurus, atlas, encyclopedia, and online resources).
3.5.8 Write or deliver a research report that has been developed using a systematic research process (defines the topic, gathers information, determines credibility, reports findings) and that: uses a variety of sources (books, technology, pictures, charts, tables of contents, diagrams) and documents sources (titles and authors). Organizes information by categorizing it into more than one category (such as living and nonliving, hot and cold) or includes information gained through observation.

The other three standards I found were written for teachers in elementary. These are new to me. I have never heard of these standards before.

Learning Processes
2.11 knowledge of how digital-age tools and environments influence learning processes and outcomes, and the ability to use this knowledge to improve teaching effectiveness and learning outcomes
Instructional Planning and Delivery
3.13 knowledge of information literacy, and the ability to promote students’ knowledge of and model and facilitate students’ use of the tools, practices, and opportunities of the information age
3.14 knowledge of types of digital tools and resources, technologies specific to the teacher’s discipline(s), and the distinction between digital curricula and digital resources, and the ability to use digital tools and resources to improve teaching effectiveness; create developmentally appropriate learning experiences that facilitate creativity, collaboration, inventiveness, and learning; customize learning experiences to meet individual needs; and help students explore real-world issues, solve authentic problems, develop global awareness, participate in local and global learning communities, and independently pursue and manage their own learning.

The 3rd grade standards 3.4.4 and 3.5.8 are writing standards that I teach every year. I could teach these standards more than once through the year. The lesson I would use to teach these would be writing a research report. I am planning on having my students write list articles next year to go along with my Biography Unit. Instead of using encyclopedias and textbooks I would like the students to use a variety of websites for information. One website that I like very much is Bio4Kids. Another one is Yahoo for Kids.

In order to use the internet more for writing ideas, 3.4.1, I would start with a list of different websites for kids to explore. I only have four computers and I don’t want students to spend tons of time surfing the internet during writing time. I would like to make this a homework assignment once a week. I could have the students (with parent supervision) surf the internet and write down an idea for a story in their writer’s notebook. I would also like them to copy down the website’s address. This will be useful for sharing and for referencing.

The first lesson, biography research, is something that I have tried in the past. Every year I improve a little better with having students use the internet. The best way to use the internet with young students is to have a list of websites that are user friendly and accessible through our school server. I am also collecting sites through my school website as a link for my students. This way I don’t have students trying to type in addresses instead they can just click a link. The faster it is for them to get to the knowledge and understand it then the better results I get in their writing.

I was very interested in the teacher standards. I realize that to be a good teacher I will have to keep up with digital tools so that I can be resourceful for my students. Many of these standards were talking about differentiation. I think that this is very important and the Internet and modern technologies will only help with reaching each child on their level and keeping them interested to learn more.
